Pre-independence car carrying Jawaharlal Nehru, freedom fighters still run today

A pre-independence car that carried India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and other freedom fighters is surprisingly ‘still working’. The vintage car is a 1939 model Chevrolet Master Deluxe and is now owned by a person from Kerala.

Mr. TK Rajesh, who is now the owner of the car, said, despite several interested parties offering it, he will keep the car as it has a proud history. This is one of the precious collections in his garage.

“The car is still running well though it is not exactly fuel-efficient,” Rajesh told Manorama News.

The car also took India’s first PM to visit Malampuzha Dam in Kerala.

The car has a rust-yellow color, and a red streak running down the A-pillar to the rear of the car, along with white walls and red tires. It also has footboards on either side for easy entry into the inside and wide fenders. The front dashboard is quite sparse even by the standards of the old Hindustan Ambassador, but the rear seat leg space is long and spacious with the side rear bench seat, cartok informed of.

The report also states, the model was classified as a four-door sports sedan, but the car was also offered in 2-door and station wagon variants. It is powered by a six-cylinder petrol engine that produces 85 hp, and a single down-draft carburetor. As we can see in the video, the engine is mated to a three-speed manual synchro-mesh gearbox with floor gear shift. A column shift was offered as an optional.
