Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday announced that vaccination against COVID-19 for healthcare and frontline workers will be done from January 10. The announcement comes amid rising cases of Kovid linked to the Omron version of the virus.

In an address to the nation, he said the precautionary dose would also be available from January 10 next year to citizens above 60 years of age and with comorbidities on the advice of their doctor.

The precaution dose refers to the third dose of vaccine for full immunization, but Modi refrained from using the term “booster dose” as it is commonly called.

Modi’s address came a day after officials said the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) has given emergency use authorization to Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin, an indigenously developed drug for children above 12 years of age, with certain conditions.

This is the second vaccine after Zydus Cadila’s needle-free COVID-19 vaccine ZyCoV-D to receive regulatory approval for use among people under the age of 18.
