Premier League: Thomas Tuchel hails Edouard Mendy’s ‘decisive’ role in Brentford win

Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy played a “decisive” role in Saturday’s 1-0 win over newcomer Brentford in the West London derby, manager Thomas Tuchel said.

Chelsea held on to the top spot in the league thanks to a strike from Ben Chilwell, but their three points were equal to goalkeeper Mendy, who pulled off a string of saves to deny Brentford an equalizer.

Mendy refused to summon Ghoddos in the 83rd minute as he went over his line to close the angle, and the Frenchman converted an acrobatic overhead effort by Christian Norgaard in injury time.

“Ed was absolutely decisive in running away with a clean sheet,” Tuchel told reporters.

“He was very strong and very focused in the build-up play. Very good performance and of course the match in the last 20 minutes turned into a cup game.

“He took a lot of risks and put a lot of bodies in our box. We couldn’t keep him away from shooting and getting big opportunities.”

Goalscorer Chilwell also heaped praise on Mendy, who joined Chelsea in September 2020.

“I don’t know how many saves he made, but there were a lot of important saves and he does that for us every week,” Chilwell told Chelsea’s website.

“He takes us out, whether it’s once or twice, or on multiple occasions in this game. He is a world class goalkeeper and we should thank him.”
