President Draupadi Murmu approves appointment of 8 IIT directors

Eight IIT directors have been appointed with the approval of President Draupadi Murmu, of whom two have been reappointed for a second term. IIT Bhilai director Rajat Moona has been named as the director of IIT Gandhinagar and IIT Dharwad director Pasumarthi Seshu has been elected as the director of IIT Goa. Directors of two other IITs have also been promoted to top positions in other IITs.

KN Satyanarayana (IIT Tirupati) and Manoj Singh Gaur are the two IIT directors who have been reappointed for a second term (IIT Jammu). IIT Madras professors Sheshadri Shekhar and Shripad Karmalkar have been named respective directors of IIT Palakkad and IIT Bhubaneswar.

Since the end of RV Rajkumar’s five-year tenure as director in April 2020, IIT Bhubaneswar has been without a whole-time director.

The Director of IIT Dharwad has been named as Venkayappa R Desai from the Department of Civil Engineering at IIT Kharagpur. The director of IIT Bhilai will be Rajeev Prakash from IIT BHU’s School of Material Science and Technology.

Application requests for six of the new IITs – Dharwad, Goa, Palakkad, Jammu, Bhilai and Tirupati – were made by the Ministry of Education (MoE) in 2021. As per the job posting which was published on 18th October, the candidate should have Ph.D. with first class or equivalent in your previous degree, ideally in the field of Engineering.

According to Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, IITs are “temples” that foster scientific mindset in students and help in creating the destiny of humanity.

He said, “IITs are not just educational institutions, they are temples to create scientific temper and shape the future of humanity. Our society has high expectations from IITs. Our IITians have to be the leaders of growth and development.”

Pradhan said, “India has a culture of giving back to the society and India innovates for the betterment of the society. Due to the technological strength of IIT Madras, India will be rolling out indigenous 5G by the end of 2023.”
