New Delhi:

President Draupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi were among world leaders who expressed condolences to President Xi Jinping over the death of Chinese leader Jiang Zemin, official media reported on Tuesday.

Jiang was the President of China from 1989 to 2002 and General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC).

Jiang, who had been suffering from leukemia, died of multiple organ failure in Shanghai on November 30 at the age of 96 and was cremated here on Monday.

On Tuesday, the CPC held a commemorative meeting in Beijing that was attended by President Xi and other senior leaders and officials of the ruling party and government.

Leaders of many countries and international organizations continued to express their deep condolences to President Xi by phone, letter or other means on the death of former leader Jiang, reported the official news agency Xinhua.

President Murmu and Prime Minister Modi were among those who expressed condolences.

The Indian Embassy here on December 1 condoled Jiang’s death on its Chinese social media post Weibo.

The message posted in Chinese said that the Embassy of India in China expressed deep condolences on the passing away of Jiang Zemin, former President of the People’s Republic of China.

Jiang was the first Chinese head of state to visit India in 1996, ushering in a new era of constructive cooperation by signing a landmark agreement to reduce tensions along the disputed border between the two countries.
