Presidential election to be held on 18th July, results on 21st July

The counting of votes for the presidential election will take place on July 21, days before President Ram Nath Kovind steps down.

Presidential elections will be held on July 18 and results will be declared on July 21, the Election Commission announced on Thursday. Counting of votes will be held in Delhi.

Before announcing the dates, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajeev Kumar gave a detailed account of the presidential election, procedure, value of votes and nomination process.

CEC Rajiv Kumar said, “A total of 4,809 voters will vote in the election. No political party can issue whip to its members.”

Nomination can be filed either by the candidate himself or by any of his proposers or supporters between 11 AM to 3 PM on specified days.

All safety measures and protocols related to COVID will be implemented at all stages of the election process. The Election Commission has also directed to ensure use of eco-friendly and biodegradable materials as part of its endeavor to make the elections eco-friendly.

A President is elected by the members of an electoral college consisting of elected members of both the Houses of Parliament and elected members of the Legislative Assemblies of the States and Union Territories.

Nominated members of Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha or State Legislative Assemblies and members of Legislative Councils are not part of the electoral college and hence do not participate in the Presidential elections.

President Ram Nath Kovind, who was elected in 2017, will remain in office till July 24, 2022.
