Pressure to be perfect creates mental health issues in teenage girls: Study

The pressure to do better in society and to live up to the criteria of an ‘ideal girl’ can lead to mental health issues in teenage girls.

According to the study, school and family environment can be a cause of stress among girls of all backgrounds.

Girls are brought up in the society with certain notions of how they should sit, talk, laugh, walk and behave as well as what kind of clothes they should wear. A new study suggests that society’s pressure to do better and fit the norms of an ‘ideal girl’ by societal norms can lead to mental health problems in teenage girls. Researchers from the University of Exeter in England have claimed in their study that the pressure of school friends and family to be the ideal girl and live up to society’s expectations can lead to mental health problems.

Dr Lauren Stantiford, lecturer in education at the University of Exeter and author of the study, said the team studied research papers published on girls’ mental health from 1990 to 2021, in which they found that adolescent girls are more prone to mental health issues.

Dr. Stantiford said, “We hope that our work will draw attention to the growing threats to the mental health of girls. It will inspire discussion about this serious topic in the education system and the environment.

According to this study published in the journal Educational Reviews, school and family environment can be a cause of stress among girls of all backgrounds. The pressure to get good grades, be active and popular, and participate in post-teaching activities affects the mental health of adolescent girls.

Studies show that the expectations of parents at home and the pressure of competition in school create future fears among adolescent girls.
