“Priority Should Be Given To Marginal Farmers”: PM Modi’s Food Action Plan At G7 Summit

PM Modi also said that it should be “our collective responsibility” to stop wastage of food.

Hiroshima:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday called for building an inclusive food system to provide relief to the world’s most vulnerable as part of his 10-point action plan to address challenges in the areas of food, fertilizer and healthcare.

In an address at a session of the G7 summit in Hiroshima, Prime Minister Modi also pitched for checking the “expansionist mindset” capturing fertilizer resources and batted strongly for democratization of technology.

Prime Minister’s 10-point action plan to curb food waste, depoliticise global fertilizer supply chains, promote millets, encourage holistic healthcare, strengthen digital healthcare and develop development models driven by the needs of developing countries involves construction.

PM Modi said that there is a need to focus on the holistic use of natural resources and the development model driven by consumerism has to be changed.

The Prime Minister said efforts should be made to create an inclusive food system that focuses on the world’s most vulnerable, especially “marginal farmers should be our priority”.

He said, “The global fertilizer supply chain has to be strengthened. Political barriers have to be removed in this. And the expansionist mindset that captures fertilizer resources has to be stopped. This should be the objective of our cooperation.”

Although the Prime Minister did not name any country.

PM Modi stressed on stopping food wastage, saying it should be “our collective responsibility”.

“It is essential for sustainable global food security,” he said.

The Group of Seven (G7), comprising the US, France, Britain, Italy, Germany, Canada and Japan, represents the world’s richest democracies. Under its G7 chairmanship, Japan invited India and seven other countries to the summit.

PM Modi also underlined the need to focus on development, technology and democracy together.

“Democratization of technology is essential. Technology can become a bridge between development and democracy,” he said.

The Prime Minister also said that the model of development should pave the way for welfare and should not become a hindrance in the progress of developing countries.

“I am confident that our discussions today will be useful in forging an important link between the agenda of the G20 and the G7. And will succeed in prioritizing the hopes and expectations of the Global South,” he said.

The Prime Minister also highlighted the importance of natural farming.

He said, “We can create a new model of natural farming as an alternative to fertilizers across the world. I believe we should take the benefits of digital technology to every farmer in the world.”

PM Modi said that organic food needs to be separated from “fashion statement and commerce” and should instead be linked to nutrition and health.

PM Modi also told about the benefits of millet.

“Millets simultaneously address the challenges of nutrition, climate change, water conservation and food security. Awareness should be created on this,” he said.

In another session, PM Modi identified climate change, environmental protection and energy security as some of the biggest challenges facing the world.

He said, “To solve all these challenges, we have to listen to the call of the earth. You have to change your behavior accordingly.”

“As we move forward with climate action, we must build resilient green and clean technology supply chains,” he said.

“If we don’t provide technology transfer and affordable funding to countries in need, our discussions will only remain discussions. There will be no change on the ground,” he said.

He said, “I can proudly say that the people of India are aware of the environment and understand their responsibilities. This sense of responsibility flows in our veins since centuries.”

The Prime Minister said that India is fully prepared to make its contribution together with all.
