Prophet comment row: Jharkhand restores internet, warns against rumour-mongers

Jharkhand Police said on Sunday that they have restored internet in the violence-hit areas. He further informed that they are monitoring the situation across Jharkhand.

“We are also taking preventive measures to check the spread of rumours. Necessary action will be taken against those spreading rumours,” Jharkhand Police said.

Protests continued across the city since the morning of June 10, and picked up pace after Friday prayers. Several shops and establishments remained closed in Ranchi on Friday in protest against the remarks.

In order to control the angry mob, police resorted to aerial firing and lathi-charge, in which some people were injured.

A senior police officer said, “Some policemen have been injured. We are probing the situation. We are strengthening the deployment.” PTI, Heavy security deployment was made to control the situation and avoid any untoward incident.

The protesters are demanding the arrest of suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma for her controversial remarks.

Protests were held in several other parts of the country on Friday against Sharma’s remarks. Large protests took place in Jama Masjid in Delhi, Howrah district in West Bengal, Srinagar, Shahranpur, Prayagraj, 14 districts of Maharashtra.

Indian ambassadors from several Arab countries like Iran, Kuwait and others were called over Sharma’s controversial remarks. Pakistan started a propaganda campaign against India using social media.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) issued a statement in which it discouraged Sharma’s statement and said that Naveen Jindal and Nupur Sharma have been suspended from the party. The envoys from Arab countries also assured that the comments made were the opinions of ‘fringe elements’ and did not represent the opinion of the nation.
