Two people died and more than 20 were injured in the violence in Ranchi.

Ranchi (Jharkhand):

20 people were injured and undergoing treatment in Jharkhand’s Ranchi after violent clashes against suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma’s objectionable remarks against Prophet Muhammad and Islam. The protesters were demanding the arrest of Ms Sharma. Among them is a youth, who was shot six times and is recovering in the hospital.

Absar, a youth undergoing treatment at Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), said he was returning from the market when he saw that he had been shot. He claims that he was returning from the market and was not participating in the protest when he saw a group of people pelting stones and in response the police opened fire. He said that he tried to run away but was shot and fell to the ground. He says he was shot six bullets, he says four bullets have been fired but two are still lodged in his body.

The doctor has said that they will take out the rest of the pills in a few days.

Another person, Tabarak, who was undergoing treatment at the hospital, claimed that he started running after seeing the sudden commotion and was shot. He also claimed that he was not participating in the protests.

The Jharkhand government has constituted a two-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the violence in Ranchi and all aspects of the incident. The committee comprises senior IAS officer Amitabh Kaushal and Additional Director General rank officer Sanjay Latekarma. They will submit their report in seven days.

RIMS officials have confirmed that two people, who were brought to the hospital after the protesters clashed with the police, died.

Of the 22 injured, 10 are policemen and others are protesters. Three of the injured are in critical condition.

Curfew was imposed in several parts of the Jharkhand capital after protesters clashed with the police yesterday.

After initiating stone-pelting, the police yesterday fired in the air and lathi-charged to control the crowd.

A huge crowd gathered on Ranchi’s Main Road and raised slogans against Nupur Sharma and former Delhi BJP media wing chief Naveen Jindal, who were expelled by the party over their remarks.
