Rameshwaram (Tamil Nadu):

A 45-year-old fisherman was allegedly raped and murdered in Vadakadu fishing village near Rameswaram by six migrant workers from Odisha, police said on Wednesday.

The incident was heavily opposed by the woman’s family and villagers, who resorted to road-rokas on the Rameswaram National Highway demanding strict action against the culprits.

The victim, who went to collect seaweed (Kadarpasi) did not return home on Tuesday morning and his family lodged a complaint, police said. Meanwhile, the body of the woman was found partially burnt at a shrimp farm near here this morning, which was searched by her family members and neighbours, police said.

On coming to know about the involvement of six laborers, the villagers beat them up. Later, he started a dharna demanding justice for the woman. All the six people involved in the gang rape and murder have been arrested.

Ramanathapuram Superintendent of Police E Karthik, who reached the spot and conducted a preliminary inquiry, said the matter was being thoroughly probed.
