Protest against open namaz in Gurugram

After Sector 47, local people demonstrated against Jumma prayers in Sector 12A

A few weeks ago, protests against offering prayers in the open in Sector 47 of Gurugram spread to Sector 12A on Friday, with a group of locals protesting against offering prayers.

Led by advocate Kulbhushan Bhardwaj, residents submitted that the place where prayers were being offered was not in the list of 30-odd designated places decided by the administration in 2018. He claimed that the vacant plot was a private property and the owners were living there. Outside Gurugram, they were not aware of the use of their land for offering Namaz. “Just as Hindus offer prayers in temples, Muslims should also offer Friday prayers in mosques and not in the open. Even these people offering prayers are not identified and we fear that Rohingyas may infiltrate into the area,” said Mr. Bhardwaj, leading the protest. He also alleged that the places designated by the administration were for offering prayers only once and not on a regular basis.

Later Mr. Bhardwaj along with others gave a formal complaint to the police in this regard.

Altaf Ahmed, who represented the Muslim community in talks with the administration on offering prayers in the open, said that after weeks of disruption in Sector 47, a group of people led by Kulbhushan Bhardwaj disrupted Jumma prayers in Sector 12A . He alleged that this was being done in a “planned and systematic manner” for the past several weeks. He said similar disruptions were witnessed in some other areas of Gurugram in March and April this year as well.
