Protests continue in Tripura over gangrape of college girl; CM says zero tolerance towards crimes

The CPI(M) and its fronts on Friday continued their agitation demanding exemplary punishment for the culprits involved in raping a college student in a moving car here earlier this week. The police have arrested two of the four named accused.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Manik Saha said that he has directed the police to take strict action against the culprits. “We have adopted a policy of zero tolerance in such (rape) cases”, he told reporters.

The victim, a second-year student of Agartala’s Ram Thakur College, was lured for a ride by an acquaintance of Anand. She was drugged inside the car and taken to a secluded spot on the outskirts of the city where he and three other youths gang-raped her for hours.

After midnight, she was thrown out of the car near her house in an unconscious state. The victim is undergoing treatment at GBP Hospital here.

₹90 lakh seized

Police has arrested the main accused Gautam Sharma and another youth. The investigation led to the startling recovery of ₹90 lakh from the house of third rape accused Prasenjit Paul in Maheshkhola area.

Tripura Police tweeted, “The source of the huge amount and other related issues are being investigated.”

The CPI(M) and its fronts protested in Agartala for the second day on Friday, demanding the arrest of four rape accused and strict punishment. The opposition Congress has not staged a protest over the incident.

Meanwhile, the Tripura Women’s Commission has taken cognizance of the incident. Its president Barnali Goswami met the victim in the hospital.
