Proud of my girls’ fighting spirit, but not results: Thomas Dennerby

A day after India’s 0-3 loss to Morocco in the FIFA U-17 women’s section World Cup 2022 Group A tie, head coach Thomas Dennerby said he was quite satisfied with the overall performance of his wards but was certainly disappointed with the results so far.

“I am proud of my girls for yesterday’s performance but not very happy with the result in the end. But they gave it all on the pitch,” said Dennerby.

“I know we are out of the tournament but still I am happy with the way my girls fought till the end. Our fitness level was not a problem. But we are not technically correct. This is an area where we need to work harder.”

“I had been trying to organize my team’s game for so long and practiced playing the last and crucial pass with precision. We should have scored a run when Anita was in a face-off with the rival keeper in the second half,” said the 64-year-old.

“Football is primarily a game of skill and we have to do more in this area. That is true,” he said.

Meanwhile, defender Shubhangi Singh, who had a good day in office against Morocco, said, “Yes the result is disappointing but we did our best. We wanted to take every chance we could. Personally, it was really a challenge for me to deal with and stop the Moroccan raiders, but I was focused to give them a tough fight.

Regardless of the result, the young tigress displayed a fighting spirit against the Moroccans and put up a strong performance in the back as well as in the middle of the field.

“The coach had a specific plan for us and we tried to follow that. We knew how to play technically but somehow the result was not in our favour. Everyone could see that we played better than our previous game as we did not give up,” captain Astam Oraon said after the final whistle.

“And that’s exactly what the coach told us to do – to make the best use of all the hard work we’ve put in the last 7-8 months on the field. The penalty that was given against us changed the whole game and eventually We lost,” she concluded.
