Pune: A cyber crook, who posed as private bank The officer duped a 70-year-old retired government official of Rs 97,000 on the pretext of helping him activate a shopping application on May 31 this year.
The victim had lodged a complaint with the police station cyber police, Kothrud The police registered a case on Thursday after preliminary investigation.
A Kothrud police officer said that the complainant is a retired central government officer and lives in the same Paud Road region. “There was some problem with the shopping application of this bank which it was using through its Credit Card, So, they searched the customer care number of the bank on the internet,” the official said.
“The victim dialed a number, but he was busy. After some time, he got a call from the same number. The caller introduced himself as an officer of the bank. The suspect said that he was asking the victim to activate the application. He requested the complainant to share his credit card details and one-time password (OTP) that he would receive,” the official said.
The complainant shared three OTPs with the scammer. Within minutes, he received messages that Rs 97,000 had been spent using his credit card.
