The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Wednesday allowed the Haryana government to hold elections to Panchayati Raj institutions. “The High Court has permitted the State of Haryana to hold elections to Panchayati Raj Institutions. The elections will be subject to the outcome of a bunch of writ petitions. These petitions will be heard in due course,” advocate Deep Karan, representing the petitioners, said. said one of them. He said a division bench of Chief Justice Ravi Shankar Jha and Justice Arun Palli passed the order after admitting the plea to allow the state to hold these elections, which were getting delayed. “We had opposed it, but the court said that since the election is getting delayed, let us allow them to hold the elections,” the lawyer said.

The matter relating to Panchayat elections in Haryana was pending before the High Court where several petitions have been filed challenging certain amendments made by the State Government in the Panchayati Raj Act. Karan said the state’s contention was that its amendments were constitutional and it should be allowed to hold elections and the trial could go on in the matter. “I am representing two women who have challenged the ban on contesting women candidates from odd-numbered wards,” she said. Notably, the term of Gram Panchayats in Haryana had ended on February 23, 2021. With opposition parties in Haryana claiming that the delay in holding panchayat elections has hampered development work in villages, the Congress has hit out at the BJP- the JJP government accusing it of running away from the polls.

Haryana Government has appointed the officers of the Development and Panchayat Department as administrators to run the Panchayat affairs.
