As per the new examination policy, Term I will consist of MCQ-type objective questions of one mark each, while Term II will consist of subjective-type questions only. The board is still finalizing the marks distribution for the term exams. The sample question papers will soon be uploaded by PSEB on its website, to help the teachers to guide the students with the new exam and question pattern.
why two term exam
On why PSEB decided to go for two-term exams, board chairman Yograj said the move is aimed at creating another method of evaluation. “It is wise to formulate an alternate plan for academic evaluation of our students in case of unforeseen situations. Additionally, the new exam mode will help students to get an idea for the OMR sheet-based exam system as most of the competitive exams are being conducted in MCQ format,” says Yograj.
No overlapping of syllabus
The board has decided not to repeat the syllabus for both Term I and Term II exams. “There will be no overlapping of syllabus and the final result will be prepared on the basis of the performance of the students in these two examinations,” says the PSEB chairman. He said that the board is hopeful that the examination of the first session will be completed before the winter break. The last dates will be announced soon.
short window to complete the course
Talking about the new evaluation policy and its challenges, Balwinder Kaur, Principal, BDS Day Boarding Senior Secondary School, Dharar, Amritsar, says that the decision to conduct two term examinations should have been taken earlier. “Term I exam is expected to be held in November-December. There is a very short window of duration for teachers to guide the students with the question pattern and complete the syllabus,” says Kaur.
“So far the syllabus is being covered chapter-wise. While the board’s sudden decision has put additional pressure on the teachers to complete the syllabus as per the new exam pattern, we are not left with time due to the upcoming festive season and holidays,” says Kaur, who is apprehensive that students will study.
