Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s resolution, ‘I will do everything possible to return the glory of hockey’

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Thursday resolved to do everything possible to restore the glory of hockey in the state.

As a part of its countrywide tour, the men’s Hockey World Cup trophy, which is scheduled to debut in Odisha on January 13, 2023, reached Amritsar (Punjab) on Wednesday.

He said that it was a matter of honor and pride that 11 players including captain Manpreet Singh were from the State in the Indian hockey team which won medal in Olympics after 41 years during the sporting event in Tokyo.

Mann said that similarly the Indian team which won the only World Cup for the country in 1975 was also led by Punjab’s son Ajitpal Singh.

The Chief Minister said that he was overwhelmed to receive the trophy. He said that it is a matter of great pride that more than half of the Indian team participating in the upcoming Hockey World Cup is from Punjab.

He said that this momentum needs to be maintained so that more medals can be won in the times to come.

The Chief Minister, however, lamented that despite being the national game, hockey has taken a back seat due to constant neglect by the previous governments.

He said that the present state government is making all out efforts to give hockey its due place in the field of sports.

Mann said that his government would make concerted efforts to end the menace of drugs by promoting sports, especially hockey.
