Chandigarh: Punjab The government on Monday appointed Tarun Vir Singh Lehal, son-in-law of Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, as additional advocate general. as an addition AGLehal will represent the Punjab government as a Law Officer in the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
Lehal was appointed by the Advocate General under Section 7. by applying the proviso to
(4) Section of the Punjab Law Officers (Engagement) Act 2017 which provides for the appointment of Law Officers in the State on the recommendations of a Selection Committee. It also means that Advocate General APS Deol has exercised his special powers to appoint Randhawa’s son-in-law as additional AG. Apart from Lehal, the AG has also appointed advocate Mukesh Chander Beri as AAG.
The provision of this section, however, gives discretionary powers to the AG, according to which, “The AG may, with the approval of the Government, appoint seven advocates who, in its opinion, possess such special qualifications and experience as it may consider.” as appropriate, law officers.”
Lehal’s job is seen as a move to please Randhawa
Lehal’s appointment to the AG office is also seen as an appeasement of Deputy CM Randhawa by AG APS Deol, who recently accused Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) chief Navjot Singh Sidhu for “obstructing the functioning of the AG office and causing havoc”. accused of spreading misinformation”. to gain political advantage”.
Sidhu has openly objected to Deol’s appointment as AG and demanded his removal. On 27 September, the Punjab government had notified the appointment of Deol as the Punjab AG. In June, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa was among five cabinet ministers who disputed with CM Captain Amarinder Singh at a cabinet meeting over the issue of giving government jobs to the sons of party MLAs.
Randhawa, who also heads the home department, did not respond to repeated calls and messages sent by TOI on his mobile regarding his stand on the appointment of his son-in-law as additional advocate general.
An agency quoted Lehal as saying that the appointment has been made on the basis of qualification and experience on the recommendation of the state’s advocate general.
