Of the 93 women who contested the Punjab elections, 13 tasted victory and 11 of them belong to the Aam Aadmi Party, which registered a landslide victory in 92 of the 117 assembly seats. Most of the AAP women candidates who have won are greenhorns.
AAP’s Jiwanjyot Kaur defeated Punjab Congress President Navjot Singh Sidhu by a margin of 6,750 votes from Amritsar East. Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia was also contesting from this seat, but finished third. However, Majithia’s wife Ganeev Kaur had tasted victory from the Majitha seat from where she entered the fray after her husband, a sitting MLA, decided to give up the seat and contest from Amritsar East.
Shiromani Akali Dal candidate Ganiway defeated AAP’s Sukhjinder Raj Singh by a margin of 26,062 votes. Punjab minister and Congress candidate Aruna Chaudhary defeated her nearest AAP rival Shamsher Singh by a margin of 1,131 votes in Dina Nagar seat.
In other seats, AAP’s woman candidate Sangrur was held, where Narinder Kaur Bharaj defeated Punjab minister Vijay Inder Singla by 36,430 votes, while in Balachaur, Santosh Kumari Kataria defeated SAD’s Sunita Rani by 4,541 votes. Sarvjit Kaur Manuke from Jagraon defeated SR Kler of SAD by 39,656 votes while Prof Baljinder Kaur defeated Jitmohinder Singh Sidhu of SAD by 15,252 votes from Talwandi Sabo.
Actor-Singer Anmol Gagan Mann defeated Ranjit Singh Gill of SAD by a margin of 37,885 votes from Kharar seat. From Ludhiana South, Rajinder Pal Kaur defeated BJP’s Satinderpal Singh Tajpuri by a margin of 26,138 votes.
Amandeep Kaur Arora defeated actor Sonu Sood’s sister Malvika Sood of Congress from Moga by a margin of 20,915 votes, while from Malout, Baljit Kaur defeated Harpreet Singh of SAD by 40,261 votes. Inderjit Kaur Mann defeated Guptap Singh Wadala of SAD by 2,869 votes from Nakodar.
Neena Mittal defeated Jagdish Kaur Jagga of BJP by 22,493 votes from Rajpura seat.
