Punjab: Facing political extinction, Sukhbir Badal disbands Shiromani Akali Dal’s party structure

Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal on Thursday disbanded the entire organizational structure of the party as per the recommendations of an election review committee set up to analyze the defeat in the Punjab Assembly elections and the recent Lok Sabha bypolls. According to a party release, all the bodies including the core committee, works committee and other units as well as all the branches of the party have been dissolved.

The Election Review Committee, also known as the Jhund Committee, sought to dismantle and reorganize the party’s organizational structure as well as rejuvenate the party in the light of grassroots sentiments in line with the interests and values ​​of Panthik and Punjabis. Several other steps were recommended for workers, cadres and leadership. The panel, led by Iqbal Singh Jhundan, visited 100 assembly constituencies to take feedback from party workers and others.

The committee has also recommended norms for the restructuring of the party and its hierarchy, keeping in mind the values ​​that originally inspired the party as well as its legacy. It also sought special attention to the aspirations of the youth.

On Wednesday, Akali Dal leader Balwinder Singh Bhundar had said that the 13-member committee has not recommended a change in its leadership. Badal has been given full powers to modify the party structure as per the recommendations of the Jhund panel.

Therefore, the party president will reach out to Punjabi and cult personalities including intellectuals, writers, religious-political thinkers, opinion makers and representatives of different sections of the society like farmers, employees, students, teachers, businessmen, housewives. youth among others.

The committee has recommended that special emphasis be placed on expressing and fulfilling the aspirations of the youth and giving them prominent representation in the new organizational structure of the party. A spokesperson of the party said, “The new structure and image of the party will be fully in line with the aspirations, dreams and goals of the youth as well as the traditional ideals and values ​​that have in the past served us in various struggles for the sect and Punjab. inspired the ancestors.”

SAD MLA Manpreet Singh Ayali had boycotted the presidential election on July 18, claiming that many issues related to Punjab remained unresolved. He had demanded the implementation of the Jhundan panel’s report and also talked about bringing a change in the party leadership.
