Punjab government to give property rights to people living within ‘red streak’ in villages, cities

Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi on Monday said that people living in houses within the ‘red streak’ of villages and cities will be given property rights. Channi changed the name of the ‘Mission Lal Lekha’ scheme to ‘Mera Ghar Mere Naam’.

“Those who are living within the ‘red streak’ in villages and cities do not have ownership rights. We decided to give ownership rights to people living in these areas,” he said after presiding over a cabinet meeting here. Thereafter, all eligible residents would be given property cards to confer ownership rights on them after due verification, he said. Beneficiaries will be given 15 days to file their objections in this regard and if no response is received from them, property card will be issued which will serve the purpose of the registry for which they can get loan from banks or Even sell your assets thereby increasing its monetary value.

Earlier the scheme was limited to residents of villages only, but now it also covers eligible residents of cities within the ‘red streak’. Channi said that generation after generation people living in houses in old mohallas (mohallas) will also be covered under this scheme.

The Chief Minister also informed that NRIs, who had occupied such residential properties in villages or cities, would also be duly informed to raise objections to grant of ownership rights to them. He said that his government will soon bring a law in the Punjab Assembly to protect the properties of NRIs settled across the world.

Channi also announced that an entry would be made in the revenue records for the protection of agricultural land owned by NRIs to prevent illegal sale of properties by some unscrupulous elements. On the issue of waiving off arrears of electricity bills up to 2 kilowatt load, the Chief Minister said that anyone irrespective of caste, creed and religion would get the benefit of exemption.

He said that out of 72 lakh consumers across the state, about 52 lakh consumers would be benefitted. Channi also clarified that only the outstanding amount mentioned in the final bill received by the consumer would be waived.

Last month, the state government had announced to waive off electricity bills for those with electricity connections up to 2 kW.
