Punjab Kings’ Chris Gayle ruled out of IPL 2021 due to “bubble fatigue”

Star player Chris Gayle has decided to leave the bio-secure environment of IPL due to “bubble fatigue”, his team Punjab Kings said on Thursday. Gayle has played two matches for the team since the resumption of the IPL and is now looking to freshen up ahead of the T20 World Cup starting next month. West Indies flew to Dubai in another bio-bubble created for the CPL and living in a protected environment weighed heavily on him like many other international players in the post-COVID times.

“Over the past few months, I have been a part of the CWI bubble, the CPL bubble and then the IPL bubble and I want to recharge and refresh myself mentally,” Gayle said in a statement issued by Punjab Kings.

“I want to refocus on helping West Indies in the T20 World Cup and take a break in Dubai. Thank you Punjab Kings for giving me the time. My wishes and hopes are always with the team. All the comings It’s great for sports.”

Head coach Anil Kumble said the team respects his decision.

“I have played against Chris and coached him at Punjab Kings and all the years I have known him he has always been an absolute professional and we as a team respect his decision and consider ourselves as a T20 World champion. Willing to prepare for the cup.” Kumble said.

Gayle is likely to stay in Dubai before joining the West Indies squad for the T20 World Cup.
