Punjab Police arrested 565 drug suppliers, dealers in a week. Chandigarh News – Times of India

Chandigarh: Punjab Police have arrested 565 drug smugglers and suppliers after registering 453 FIRs, including 34 for commercial quantities, under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act across the state in the past one week.
Inspector General of Police (HQ) Sukhchain Singh Gill On Monday, the state police had managed to recover a cumulative quantity of 155.39 kg heroin last week, which included 147.5 kg heroin from Gujarat and Maharashtra 7.89 kg heroin was seized in two interstate operations in the state.
He said that on July 12, in a joint operation with ATS Gujarat, Punjab Police recovered 75 kg of heroin from a container at the Mundra port in Gujarat. In a similar operation with the Maharashtra Police on July 15, 72.5 kg of heroin was recovered from a container at Mumbai’s Nhava Sheva Port.
Addressing media persons on drug recovery, the IG said that the Chief Minister has given Punjab Police full freedom to wage war on drugs, a massive anti-drug campaign has been launched to tackle the menace.
Gill said that apart from recovering a huge quantity of heroin, the police also recovered Rs 16 lakh worth of narcotic substance, 15 kg of opium, 37 kg of ganja, 16 quintals of poppy husk, and 64,000 intoxicating pills or capsules. Besides barricading on sensitive routes across the state, cordon and search operations in drug-affected areas. He said that 10 fugitives and fugitive criminals have also been arrested under the NDPS Act in the last one week.
The IG said that to save themselves from arrest, drug smugglers nowadays prefer to smuggle drugs on foot, selling drugs in small quantities to ensure that even if they are caught, their case gets resolved.
