Police on Thursday used water cannons to disperse a group of farmers who tried to enter the venue of an event of Shiromani Akali Dal in Punjab’s Moga, addressed by its chief Sukhbir Singh Badal. Were. The police claimed that some protesters manhandled them and pelted stones to forcefully enter the SAD’s venue at Anaj Mandi in Moga.
“We warned them several times. But some protesters pelted stones after which the police used force and water cannons to disperse them. They also blocked the national highway near the spot which was later cleared. Moga Superintendent of Police Dhuman Nimbale said, adding that around 35 out of 600 protesters have been detained and the situation has been brought under control.
SAD president and MP Sukhbir Singh Badal was addressing the program at Anaj Mandi when the protesters tried to enter the forcibly. Some of the protesting farmers said that they wanted to question Badal on some issues, but were stopped by the police. “They tried to break the barricades. When stones were pelted, we had to resort to lathi-charge in a restrained manner to disperse them,” the SSP said.
SAD chief Sukhbir Singh Badal had recently started a 100-day “yatra” in 100 assembly constituencies of Punjab. A protesting farmer said they have been protesting at the borders of the national capital for more than nine months, but political parties are “more concerned with power and only shedding crocodile tears for farmers”.
A few days back also, the SAD faced protests from a group of farmers during its program at Baghapurana in Moga district.
