Quit Congress on May 16, says Kapil Sibal, ‘Hope he will find peace,’ party’s reply

New Delhi: Senior leader and former Union minister Kapil Sibal on Wednesday said he had quit the Congress on May 16 as he filed his nomination for the Rajya Sabha as an independent candidate backed by the Samajwadi Party (SP).

Sibal, while filing his nomination in the presence of SP chief Akhilesh Yadav in Lucknow, said, “I was a Congress leader, but am no more.” “We are all coming together for 2024,” he said.

Sibal has not officially confirmed joining the SP and currently remains without any party affiliation.

Reacting to Sibal’s announcement, the Congress expressed hope that he would “find peace in his new party”.

‘We will expose the central government’

Speaking to reporters in Lucknow, Sibal thanked Akhilesh Yadav for supporting his Rajya Sabha nomination.

We will expose the central government. Together we will put everything in front of the public.

Sibal, a member of the disgruntled G-23 group in the Congress, had a public split with the leadership following the results of the recent assembly elections in five states. In an interview after the results, Sibal said That the Gandhi family should “move away” from the leadership of the party.

Following Sibal’s statement, the rest of the G-23 group members distanced themselves from him, though he did hold talks with the party leadership to push for some organizational changes.

Speaking to ThePrint, Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera in a brief response said: “All the best to him. I hope he finds peace in his new party.

ThePrint has learned from party sources that Sibal did not renew his membership in the Congress membership drive that recently ended on May 15. He said that he left the party on May 16.
