Quit smoking but turned to vaping? Here’s Why You Should Be Careful

We have often seen people turn to e-cigarettes as a means to quit smoking. This is hardly surprising as many believe that e-cigarettes are a healthier alternative to actual cigarettes because vaping does not contain tobacco. Let’s make it a little clearer here: E-cigarettes are a type of electronic nicotine delivery system, also known as ENDS for short. This liquid is filled with nicotine, which emits vapor instead of burning. This vapor, or ‘vaping’ as it is popularly called, has health risks.

According to a report published in Dainik Jagran, a study shows that nicotine consumed in this way immediately accelerates blood clotting in the human body. It also reportedly restricts the ability of small arteries to dilate, which in turn increases blood pressure and heart rate. Nicotine also increases the level of adrenaline in the body, which is also responsible for blood clotting to an extent.

The research was presented Monday at the European Respiratory Society (ERS) International Congress. Scientists at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm studied a group of 22 men and women aged 18-45 who were occasional smokers but still healthy. However, immediate short-term changes were observed in his body after the vaping was introduced.

Gustaf Littenen, who is a doctor at Helsingborg Hospital and a researcher at the Karolinska Institutet, said the effects were related because they were close to the effects of traditional cigarettes.

Effect of e-cigarette seen in experiment:

Within 15 minutes of nicotine intake, there was a 23 percent increase in the rate of blood clotting. After an hour it was back to normal.

A sharp increase in heart rate from 66 beats per minute (bpm) to 73 bpm was observed.

Average blood pressure (from 108 mmHg to 117 mmHg) increased.

The participants’ arteries were found to have constricted for some time.

However, the above effects were not seen in people who used e-cigarettes without nicotine.
