DMK’s transgender candidate R Ganga won the recently concluded Tamil Nadu Urban Local Body elections from Vellore City Municipal Corporation (VMC) by a margin of 15 votes.

R Ganga has emerged victorious from Ward 37 of VMC. He got 2,131 votes in the election. She has been a member of the party for the last 20 years.

Urban local body elections in Tamil Nadu were held on Saturday for 12,607 posts in 21 corporations, 138 municipalities and 490 nagar panchayats.

Voting for the urban body elections was held in a single phase.

In October 2016, the elections were scheduled but were postponed in view of the Madras High Court directive. Subsequently, several developments, political and administrative, contributed to the delay.

57,778 candidates are contesting for 12,607 posts.
