Rahul Gandhi re-elected as Congress President? Secret Facebook post fuels speculation as party prepares for presidential election

Rahul Gandhi, who is on a 3,500-km-long India Jodi Yatra, posted a cryptic post on Facebook on Monday, which has wide ranging interpretations in the current context as his party Congress prepares to elect its president.

“When the boat gets stuck in the middle, the rudder has to be taken in hand. Will not stop, will unite India,” read a loose translation in Hindi of the former Congress chief’s Facebook post along with a picture in which he can be seen sailing a boat.

The MP from Wayanad today participated in a snake boat race exhibition at Punnamada Lake in Kerala.

Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Jammu and Kashmir, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu Bihar Congress units have passed a resolution urging Rahul Gandhi to lead the party as the next president. However, Madhusudan Mistry, the chief electoral officer overseeing the Congress’ presidential elections, told News18: “These proposals are not binding on us. We have prepared a list of voters and it is available for those who want to contest elections. If there is more than one candidate, we will hold elections.”

The Congress Working Committee (CWC) – Congress’s highest decision-making body – met in August to approve the election for its president on October 17. The results of the elections are to be declared on October 19.

During this, News18 Sources said Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot is also expected to contest for the Congress president’s post. Though sources say that Shashi Tharoor is likely to contest the polls, he told News18: “I am yet to finalize.”

Tharoor incidentally met Sonia Gandhi recently. Sources claim that she has made it clear that she will not support any candidate or any person who wants to contest elections. It is not clear whether Tharoor will contest as a G-23 member or alone.

Amid speculation and news reports, senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said: “Whoever wants to contest elections is free and you are welcome to do so. This has been the consistent position of Congress and Rahul Gandhi. It is an open, democratic and transparent process. No one’s permission is needed to contest elections.”

On December 11, 2017, Rahul Gandhi was unanimously elected as the party president. He led the party to victory in the 2018 assembly elections in Karnataka, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh. However, the Congress suffered a humiliating defeat in the 2019 general elections. He left the top post, taking “moral” responsibility. Several party leaders across the country resigned from their party posts after the 2019 defeat in solidarity with Rahul Gandhi.
