Rajasthan Chief Minister and a prominent member of the Congress party, Ashok Gehlot has attributed his party’s strong showing on the Karnataka assembly election results to Rahul Gandhi’s pan-India padyatra. “Bharat Jodo Yatra”.

Meanwhile, a resurgent Congress was headed for a simple majority in Karnataka and was set to wrest power from the BJP in a morale-boosting victory ahead of next year’s Lok Sabha polls.

As per the latest trends, the Mallikarjun Kharge-led party was leading in 119 constituencies, well above the 113 marks required for a majority in the 224-member House, for which elections were held on May 10.

The BJP, which won 104 seats in the last assembly polls, was ahead in 74 seats and the JD(S) led by former chief minister HD Deve Gowda was leading in 24 seats. Others were leading in seven seats.

While chief minister Basavaraj Bommai (Shigaon), former chief minister Siddaramaiah (Varun), state Congress president DK Shivakumar (Kanakpura), and JD(S) leader HD Kumaraswamy (Channapatna) are among the leading faces in their respective constituencies, Kumaraswamy’s son Nikhil (Ramanagar), BJP national general secretary CT Ravi (Chikkamagaluru) and Congress (Hubli-Dharwad Central) former chief minister Jagadish Shettar are trailing.
