Indian Railways has registered a record revenue of Rs 2.40 lakh crore in the financial year 2022-23, which is almost Rs 49,000 crore more than the previous year. The ministry gave this information in a statement on Monday. In 2022-23, freight revenue is set to increase to Rs 1.62 lakh crore, which is about 15 per cent higher than the previous year.

Passenger revenue of Indian Railways has registered highest ever growth of 61 percent and reached Rs.63,300 crore. “After three years, Indian Railways has been able to fully meet the pension expenditure. The buoyancy in revenue and tight expenditure management have helped it achieve an operating ratio of 98.14 per cent within the revised estimate target. All revenue expenditure has been met After doing so, the Railways has earned Rs 3,200 crore from its internal resources for capital investment,” it said.

The Railways has over the years approached the Ministry of Finance to bear some part of its pension burden. The statement further said that in terms of traffic revenue, the Railways earned Rs 63,300 crore in 2022-23 as compared to Rs 39,214 crore in 2021-22. Railways to earn Rs 5,951 crore as other coaching revenue in 2022-23 as compared to Rs 4,899 crore during 2021-22. Sundari’s revenue during FY 2022-23 stood at Rs 8,440 crore as compared to Rs 6,067 crore in 2021-22.

During 2022-23, the gross revenue stood at Rs 2,39,803 crore as compared to Rs 1,91,278 crore in 2021-22. Also, gross traffic receipts stood at Rs 2,39,750 crore as compared to Rs 1,91,206 crore in 2021-22. Total railway receipts in 2022-23 were Rs 2,39,892 crore as compared to Rs 1,91,367 crore in the previous year.

According to the statement, the total railway expenditure in 2022-23 was Rs 2,37,375 crore as compared to Rs 2,06,391 crore in 2021-22. The operating ratio in 2022-23 was 98.14 percent. In terms of capital expenditure, the capital investment during 2022-23 was Rs 1,09,004 crore as compared to Rs 81,664 crore in 2021-22. Rs 30,001 crore has been spent during 2022-23 as against Rs 11,105 crore during 2021-22 under the Railway Safety Fund.
