Rain in Chennai gave relief to the residents of the heat

On Wednesday evening, heavy rain occurred at many places over the north and west parts of Chennai.

The weather office here has predicted light to moderate rain in the city on Thursday, which will help bring down the temperature. Officials of the Regional Meteorological Office, Chennai said that the convergence of westerly winds is causing the rains.

Villivakkam recorded 3 cm of rain, followed by Nungambakkam, Meenambakkam and Tiruvallur 1 cm. These figures were recorded till 8.30 pm on Wednesday. The rains brought down the temperature by 3 degree Celsius in Nungambakkam and 4 degree Celsius in Meenambakkam. The maximum temperature on Thursday is likely to be around 34 degrees Celsius and the minimum around 26 degrees Celsius.

The RMC has predicted that light to moderate rain is very likely at isolated places over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal regions on Thursday. Heavy to very heavy rain is very likely at isolated places over Nilgiris and Ghat areas of Coimbatore district. Heavy rain is very likely at isolated places over Tiruppur, Theni and Dindigul districts.

Weather blogger Pradeep John said that Chennai received monsoon-like rains due to the intensification of Stratus Clouds. He said that with heavy rains in the Cauvery catchment area in Kodagu, dams like Kabini and Hemavati in the Cauvery basin are also filling up. He said that as long as the monsoon remains active over Kerala and Karnataka, Tamil Nadu will remain cloudy like monsoon.
