Rain warning: 4 killed in Bengal after being hit by nor’wester; 14 killed in Assam floods

At least 4 people died in West Bengal on Saturday evening as the nor’wester died in some parts of the state. One person died due to wall collapse in East Bardhaman district, while one person died due to lightning in Nadia district. Two boys also died when their boat capsized in Kolkata’s Rabindra Sarobar Lake.

Disaster Management Minister Javed Ahmed Khan told PTI that several trees fell in different parts of the metropolis, disrupting traffic.

Meanwhile, a tree fell on the Metro Rail track between Mahanayak Uttam Kumar and Netaji railway stations in Kolkata, disrupting services in a section. “Services remained affected between 4.40 pm and 5.30 pm,” an official said.

The Kolkata IMD said that north and south 24 Parganas, Hooghly and Purba Bardhaman districts were affected by norwesterly speed up to 90 kmph in some parts of the state.

People got relief from the scorching heat due to the storm, but due to less number of public vehicles, commuters also suffered.

14 killed in Assam floods

Meanwhile, 14 people have died in the floods in the state for the past few days, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority said in an update.

It said that the total population of 3,246 villages in 32 districts affected by floods is 8,39,691 including six districts affected by landslides.

According to the report, 80036.90 hectares of crop land and 2,251 villages are still under water.

A total of 74705 flood-affected people are currently residing in 234 relief camps set up by the district administration.
