Rat bite patient dies in ICU of Telangana hospital

The patient was admitted to the ICU of Telangana hospital five days ago

Hyderabad:

A patient bitten by rats has died at a government hospital in Warangal, Telangana. The patient was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Warangal’s MGM Hospital five days ago after being treated at a private hospital.

Following the shocking incident, the department’s respiratory ICU head has been suspended and the hospital superintendent has been transferred.

The patient suffering from multi-organ failure is unconscious since then. He has been put on artificial ventilation and is being treated by doctors, a hospital official said.

Patients and staff say the ICU is full of rats as the drainage system is being repaired. Patients say that rat bite is common in the ward.

An attendant said, “We thought it was our fate. We have no choice but to suffer it. But when the rats bitten my relative this time, he was bleeding profusely. The bed was covered in blood. That’s why I complained.”

The nurse on duty also said that if she was not alert for even a few minutes, the rats could create havoc. “We can’t do anything because the drainage repair is underway,” she said.

A show cause notice has also been issued to the cleaning agency.
