The Amazon series, like the books, is brutally skilled with an interesting central mystery and character.

Alan Richson has the best, perfect Rambo-Rimbaud combination that is the epitome of Jack Reacher…if a little too gym-toned. In an interview with this writer, Child discussed when to set the show: in the ’90s when the book was written, or in the present. The makers finally opted for a timeless look where smartphones and social media are a fact of life, but not the driving force of the show.

It’s proven to be a smart decision with the Reacher being comfortable around cell phones, but not chained to it. So he doesn’t come across as some kind of weird Luddite, but as someone who counts his folding toothbrush, cash and passport cushion as his only assets. Even the central mystery works like a charm.

Fans of Jack Reacher, who has followed the adventures of the ex-Military policeman in more than 26 novels, will be delighted at the meticulousness of the character’s creation. From his need to stray away from the canon of campfires and nicknames, to his habit of tying up his clothes instead of doing the laundry (that T-shirt was fun and he even wears a suit!) it’s everything. That doesn’t mean the show isn’t good enough to attract new people. Reacher, like the books, is brutally skilled, with an interesting central mystery and character. It definitely has legs for the long haul.

Reacher will stream on Amazon Prime Video from February 4
