The hijab controversy began in January at a government-run PU college in Udupi, where six students attended classes wearing headscarves in violation of the prescribed dress code. Later it spread to some other colleges in nearby Kundapur and Bindur.

The Karnataka High Court later dismissed all writ petitions by Muslim girl students seeking permission to wear hijab in colleges and held that hijab is not a part of the essential religious practices of Islam.
