Record 1.4 degrees in Delhi, lowest this season as fresh cold wave

The minimum temperature is likely to drop further, the Met office said.

New Delhi:

It was a chilly morning in Delhi and its neighboring areas as the minimum temperature in the national capital dropped to 1.4 degrees Celsius, the lowest this season so far.

Cold wave conditions and foggy weather continued over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and parts of Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan as well.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert for severe cold wave conditions and fog in parts of North India for the next three days.

Dense fog reduced visibility in Delhi and other parts of north India, delaying several trains.

The minimum temperature is likely to drop further by about 2 degrees Celsius in many parts of northwest and central India over the next few days, officials said.

Earlier, Delhi witnessed intense cold wave from January 5 to January 9, which was the second longest duration in the month in a decade.

Met officials said the city has witnessed 50 hours of dense fog so far in January, the highest for the month since 2019.

Meteorologists attribute a large gap between the two Western Disturbances to a prolonged period of intense cold. Hence, cold winds from snow-capped mountains prevailed over Delhi for longer than usual.
