Record power demand in Delhi at 7,601MW due to hot and humid weather

New Delhi National capital Delhi is battling scorching heat and humidity, which pushed power demand to a record high of 7,601 MW on Tuesday.

At a time when India is facing power shortage due to crisis arising out of excessive demand for non-renewable source of energy-CoalRealtime data suggested that the peak power demand of the city stood at 7601 MW at 3.21 pm.

The data was collected from the State Load Despatch Center (SLDC). The previous high of 7409 MW in Delhi was recorded on 2 July 2019.

The power demand of the city had never exceeded 7000 MW in the month of June. Discom officials said it did this for the first time on June 9 this year and has crossed the 7000 MW mark nine times in this month so far.

He said that the main reason for the power load in Delhi during summer is the cooling load due to widespread use of air conditioners, coolers and fans.

In fact, according to estimates, about 50 percent of Delhi’s electricity demand in summer is due to the cooling load, Distribution officials said.

The peak power demand in the month of June was 6921 MW in 2021, 6314 MW in 2020 and 6769 MW in 2019 Delhi.

The highest power demand in previous years was 7323 MW in 2021, 6314 MW in 2020, 7409 in 2019 and 7016 MW in 2018.

Discom officials said the maximum power demand is expected to reach 8200 MW this year.

BSES discoms – BRPL and BYPL – recorded peak demand of 3302 MW and 1662 MW respectively as the city’s total peak demand touched 7601 MW on Tuesday, SLDC realtime data showed.

a spokesperson of Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited(TPDDL) stated that the DISCOMs successfully met the maximum power demand of 2173 MW, without any network interruption and power outage.
