Red Notice Review: Gal Gadot, Ryan Reynolds, Dwayne Johnson’s Netflix Film High on Action, Low on Story

red notice

Director: Rawson Marshall Thurber

Cast: Gal Gadot, Ryan Reynolds, Dwayne Johnson

An explosive, adrenaline-pumping experience is what I expected from Netflix’s Red Notice (dubbed as the most expensive movie from the streaming platform), but what I got was more. A roller-coaster ride revolving around the world, the film will leave its audience utterly thrilled and exhausted till the end.

Before I get to the questions you want answered, let me outline the story.

Cleopatra’s precious gem-adorned eggs are at the center of Red Notice, a new action-adventure comedy from writer-director Rawson Marshall Thurber. The film begins with Nolan Booth (Ryan Reynolds), the second best art thief in the world, leaving us with one question – who is the best? It’s the elusive Bishop (Gal Gadot), who joins hands with an FBI special agent John Hartley (Dwayne Johnson) to help capture Booth before flipping Cleopatra’s second egg from a museum. Why? To ensure that the number one spot remains unopposed. But when Hartley is framed for a crime he himself is investigating, he is forced to team up with Booth to remove Bishop once and forever.

Throughout Red Notice, Reynolds and Johnson’s onscreen friendship is on point. This is the USP of the film – as intended by the makers. The best part is that none of the actors aim for one-upmanship, instead you watch them feed off each other’s energy. There is also a pleasant comic vibe between the two actors. But it’s hard to take your eyes off Gadot, who promises a heartwarming film.

I could hear men and even some women gasping in the cinema hall whenever Gadot came on screen, and I have to admit – I was mesmerized to see him on screen, too. This is his film.

In fairness, it’s not just the action, but the energy of the film, and by that I mean the stunts, the gadgets, the songs, the locations, almost everything. This is what I call “all-stop draw out entertainment”. The makers of this movie want you to suspend your sense of disbelief and just go for the ride which you are all set to undertake, but having said that, there are some things which are not forgiven can go.

Everything about the film is superficial: the screenplay, the suspense and the direction. The fanciful twists and double-crosses (which almost make you feel like the director has decided to take tips from Abbas-Mustan) invoke nostalgia and as a viewer you can easily predict them. The plot and the formulaic story is what brings the film down. It seems that Thurber decided to draw inspiration from several Hollywood movies of the past, including Mission Impossible, Ocean’s Eleven, and even Money Heist.

Cinematography by Marcus Forder and Michael L. Sail’s edits deserve mention as they allow the actors to salvage poorly written scripts. If Reynolds is goofy and funny, Johnson does what he does well with his muscular body. Gadot is stylish and superb while performing his stunts. The trio has an amazing energy that fills the big gaps in the film.

It appears that Red Notice has all the right ingredients for a franchise-ready adventure (Thurber left the ending open for a sequel), yet something notably closes when the pieces are pieced together. goes. Plus, the film looks sleek and boasts of attractive A-list actors performing spectacular stunts in gorgeous locations across the globe.

To answer your question, is Red Notice worth a look?

I would definitely recommend it. The movie is a high-profile bang show that is the best, popcorn entertainment for the action movie lovers.
