It is routine for the political opposition to accuse the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of using divisive tactics to distract people from real issues, such as weak job creation. Nationalist Congress Party leader Sharad Pawar this week sought to give a new social edge to his criticism of the BJP’s policies by drawing a link between unemployment and the marriage rate. He cited his experience of meeting a passive group of 15–20 men aged 25–30 who said they were undergraduates and postgraduates but were still single because, as they told him, they had no There was no job and the family would not let them go. He has brides. He said that this is increasingly being heard in the rural areas of Maharashtra. From Pawar’s tone, it is clear that he expected both sympathy for brideless men and blame for their plight assigned to policy makers. Still, it’s not clear that either is warranted. The reasons for the rejection of the groom could be various, and the leader had only a one-sided version. The notion of brides getting jobs also reflects a sense of male entitlement. And while earnings may be related to marriages, our marriage attitudes may not be tied to economic policy. It is over reductive even for politics.
