Regional grouping SCO adopts India’s proposal on Digital Public Infrastructure

India has already signed an agreement with more than a dozen countries to adopt UPI

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said on Saturday that members of the inter-governmental body Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, which includes China and Pakistan, have unanimously adopted India’s proposal for development of digital public infrastructure.

India has developed Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) like Unified Payments Interface, Aadhaar etc. to provide services to the people in a convenient manner.

“The Digital Ministers of SCO member states met today and unanimously adopted India’s proposal to develop Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) as the right way to implement digital technologies among the member states,” Vaishnav said.

The SCO consists of eight member states (China, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Pakistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan), four observer states seeking full membership (Afghanistan, Belarus, Iran and Mongolia) and six ‘dialogue partners’. ‘ (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Cambodia, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Turkey).

Vaishnav said that the DPI is very important from the point of view of completion, ensuring that there is democratization of technology and ensuring digitally inclusive growth among the member states.

“The need for interoperability among the various systems being developed by the member states was also felt and the body recognized the need to set up an organization to establish common standards for the interoperability of digital systems among the member states,” Vaishnav said. “

The government as part of its responsibility as G20 Presidency has started reaching out to several countries to offer technology stacks to them at no cost and it is expected that Indian startups and system integrators will benefit from this exercise.

India has already signed an agreement with more than a dozen countries to adopt UPI.

Currently, BHIM UPI QR is already approved in Singapore, UAE, Mauritius, Nepal and Bhutan.
