Release of water in LBP canal extended till January 25

The Water Resources Department (WRD) has passed an order extending the release period from January 15 to January 25 in Lower Bhavani Project (LBP) canal.

Typically, water is released from the Bhavanisagar Dam into the LBP main canal, benefitting 1.03 lakh acres in Erode, Tiruppur and Karur districts every year for 120 days from August 15 to December 12. In the current season, water was released into the LBP main canal with even numbered sluice gates on August 15, 2021, and 1,03,500 acres at Gobichettipalayam, Bhavani, Perundurai, Erode to the odd-numbered sluice gates in the Chennasamudram canal Ayakat areas. was left to benefit. Modakkurichi and Kodumudi taluks in Erode district and Kangayam taluks in Tiruppur district and Aravakurichi taluks in Karur district.

On August 20, the main canal in Malaipalayam village of Perundurai Sangha caused cracks in houses and farm land, following which the flow of water was stopped. The breach was repaired and water was released into the canal. Based on the request of various farmer unions, the release of water, which was initially to be stopped on December 13, 2021, was extended for another month till January 15.

Keel Bhavani Murai Neer Pasana Vivasaigal Kootamappu has urged the government to extend the period of release of water. Hence, based on the request, an order to release the water was issued.
