Republic Day 2023: January 26, 1950 marked the establishment of the Constitution of India as it emerged from a brutal colonial past.
Happy Republic Day 2023: This year 26 January is the 74th Republic Day of India. On this day the then British colony adopted its constitution prepared by the members of the Constituent Assembly. January 26, 1950 marked the establishment of the Constitution of India as it emerged from a brutal colonial past. However, on November 26, 1949, the Indian Constitution was adopted for the first time. November 26 is celebrated as Constitution Day.

Republic Day: History
The Constituent Assembly was the body that drafted the Constitution of India. It held its first session on 9 December 1946, which was attended by 207 members, including nine women. Initially, the assembly had 389 members, however after independence and the partition of India, on 15 August 1947, the strength was reduced to 299.
The Drafting Committee headed by Dr. BR Ambedkar was one of the more than 17 committees of the Constituent Assembly. The task of the Drafting Committee was to prepare a draft constitution for India. The committee got rid of about 2,400 amendments while debating and deliberating on the constitution out of about 7,600 amendments.

The last session of the Constituent Assembly ended on November 26, 1949, when the Constitution was adopted. However, it came into effect two months later, on January 26, 1950, after the signature of the 284 members who signed it.
Republic Day: Significance
26 January was fixed as the Republic Day of India as it was the day when the Indian National Congress (INC) announced the Declaration of Indian Independence in 1930. The date was chosen since the Congress’s Purna Swaraj resolution was announced on this day.
The resolution also marked the beginning of a large-scale nationwide political movement against colonial rule.
