Republican Party calls January 6 Capitol riot ‘legitimate political discourse’

Republican National Committee condemns US Representatives Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger for their involvement in investigation against Donald Trump

The Republican Party prepared on Friday to condemn two of its own US representatives, Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger, over their involvement in a congressional investigation into former President Donald Trump’s efforts to reverse the 2020 presidential election.

Ms Cheney and Kinzinger voted to impeach Donald Trump on charges of inciting rebellion after last year’s deadly January 6, 2021, Capitol riot and are the only Republicans to participate in a House of Representatives investigation into the attack.

The Republican National Committee (RNC) resolution rebuked Ms. Cheney and Mr. Kizinger for their inclusion on the 6 January select committee, accusing them of “participating in the Democrat-led harassment of ordinary citizens engaged in legitimate political discourse”. charged off. copy received by Reuters,

It says his actions have harmed Republican efforts to gain a majority in Congress.

The measure says that the RNC will “immediately cease any and all their support” as party members, but stops calling for their ouster from the party, as was initially proposed.

All 168 members of the RNC will consider the proposal at its winter meeting in Salt Lake City on Saturday.

Mr Trump, who keeps a firm grip on his party as the November 8 midterm congressional elections draw closer, is on a war footing against Republicans who have taken a stand against him. Republicans are trying to wrest control of both the House and Senate from fellow Democrats of President Joe Biden.

Both lawmakers issued statements in anticipation of Friday’s vote.

“The leaders of the Republican Party have held themselves hostage to a man who admits he tried to reverse the presidential election and suggested that he pardon the defendants on 6 January (2021), some of whom Has been charged with conspiracy to sedition,” Ms. Cheney said, referring to hundreds of Trump supporters accused of various crimes in the violent attack.

Four people died on January 6, 2021, and a Capitol Police officer was killed the next day. About 140 police officers were injured, and four later died by suicide.

Ms Cheney said she does not recognize those in her party who “abandoned the Constitution to embrace Donald Trump, who has supported her challenger in the Wyoming Republican primary.

Mr Kinzinger, who is not seeking re-election, said he has been a conservative Republican since before Mr Trump entered politics. He vowed to “continue to work to fight the political matrix that has led us to this point.”

Not all Republicans stand against both.

Republican Senator Mitt Romney praised Ms Cheney and Kinzinger in a Twitter post on Friday, describing them as honorable. Shame on a party that condemns people who seek truth before their conscience, he wrote.

A Reuters analysis found that at least 71 Republican members of Congress last year transferred money to the campaigns of congressional Republicans, including Cheney, who supported Trump’s removal from office.

Republican Senator Bill Cassidy came to her defense late Thursday, writing on Twitter, “The RNC is condemning Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger as they try to figure out what happened on Jan. 6 (2021) – huh.” ?”
