Of the 761 candidates recommended for appointment by the Union Public Service Commission, 27 were trained in resident coaching academies at Jamia Millia Islamia and Aligarh Muslim University, beating the odds amid the Covid-19 pandemic and the controversy surrounding ‘UPSC Jihad’. Were.

The academies had invited applications for free coaching with hostel facilities from women and candidates from minority, scheduled caste and scheduled tribe communities to help them prepare for the preliminary-cum-main examination.

RCA came into existence in 2009 with the approval of University Grants Commission (UGC). The total sanctioned amount was Rs 1,328.78 lakh.

pandemic challenge

Engineering student Faizan Ahmed, son of a station master from Rajasthan, has secured 58th rank in his second attempt. “We were preparing amidst a lot of challenges as the physical classes were suspended. There were no individual discussions or tests. People lost friends and relatives (in the Covid-19 pandemic), and had problems concentrating due to difficulties in obtaining test series and study materials. Grief wreaked havoc on our mental health… but we had to focus,” he said, adding that he would watch the documentary to distract himself from the chaos.

Jamia RCA faculty Mohammad Tariq said he did not expect the 19 residential students to clear the exam due to the challenges posed by the pandemic. “We could have done better but due to the pandemic there were many students who could not attend. Test series, mock interview tests could not be done.

“We are six less than last year’s performance, but I didn’t even expect 19 as we missed our regular assignments. It was a tough year for first-timers. And you can see how many in- Service candidates got re-appointments,” he said.

Tariq as a teacher is not satisfied and is targeting success for at least 75 candidates.

Aligarh Muslim University said that the results are better than expected. “Residential Coaching Academy, AMU has boomed with remarkable success. Five students had cleared the UPSC Civil Services (Mains) Exam 2020 under the civil services coaching program of RCA, AMU. Three of these students have finally qualified the UPSC Civil Services Examination 2020, the result of which was declared on 24.09.2021. AMU Public Relations Officer shared the note.

It said that three students had cleared the UPSC Civil Services exam in 2012, while two students had cleared the exam in 2014, one in 2016 and two in 2018.

“This success has once again demonstrated RCA’s position as a platform for academic excellence and good professional training after a period of two years,” the statement said.

AMU and RCA in Jamia are currently inviting online applications for free coaching and guidance for civil services, judicial services and SSC-CGL coaching programs. Scholarships are awarded to a limited number of meritorious and needy students.

distasteful atmosphere

The written exam was held in January 2021, the past months saw heated debate over a controversial show by a channel on ‘UPSC Jihad’. The government termed the program “not in good taste” and “likely to promote communal attitudes”. The matter was heard in the Supreme Court where the channel was accused of violating the program code.

“This has been happening for years now. As a history teacher, I know. Muslim students are not deterred by this. In fact, their participation is determined by their socio-economic realities such as access to higher education and the quality of education. It is,” said Tariq.

His lack of support is being addressed by the RCA and other organisations, he said, adding that he had faith in India’s cosmopolitan culture and constitutional morality.
