Residents of Uyyalikuppam worried over fishing

Fishermen from Uyyalikuppam in Chengalpattu district on the East Coast Road are concerned over the death of fish in the Buckingham Canal near Bar Mouth. For two days, they have been watching dead fish, including Madwa, Keluthi and Kendai, swimming in the muddy waters.

Resident R. Ranganathan said the water was foaming and smelled of chemical. “About 30 families from our village go fishing in the canal and we are worried about it. The canal joins Palar near our village, which means this dirty, polluted water will pollute the river as well,” he said, adding that the crabs of the crab fat-making facility set up by the villagers two years ago died due to this pollution. Had gone.

Dayalan, MD, Bhartiya Meenavar Sangam, said there were a few aquaculture farms in the neighborhood and these were regularly taking out untreated cleaning fluids. “These chemicals are causing the death of the fish in the canal,” he said.
