In the meeting chaired by the chairman of the committee, Loknath Shetty, it was also resolved to undertake a padyatra from Bajpe to Kateel for divine intervention.
Former Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Akademi president Dayanand G Kathalsar told TOI that the Yakshagana of the Kateel Mela is being performed not as a theater art, but as a part of worship. “Yakshagana has its own ritualistic bindings and the performance starts at 8 pm and continues till sunrise the next day. If the length of the Yakshagana is reduced, it will lose its essence. Yakshagana summarizes the Vedas, Shastras, Puranas and Upanishads and explains it to the common man. When it is reduced to short duration performances, people will not understand the essence and the original purpose of Yakshagana will be lost. Hence, it should be presented in full length by morning,” he said.
Soon a memorandum will be submitted to CM Basavaraj Bommai. If needed, changes can be made to comply with state guidelines on the use of loudspeakers to allow Yakshagana performances throughout the night. In the meantime, a date would be fixed soon to undertake a padyatra for divine intervention till the Kateel temple, he said.
