Menstruation is a monthly event for women. The process is organic and natural, but there are a lot of taboos and stigmas surrounding it. One such tradition is Chaupadi. It is a custom in Nepal that restricts women from participating in any household activities during their menstruation. He is not even allowed to stay inside his house.

According to the Third Eye Foundation, even though the Supreme Court of Nepal banned the practice of chaupadi in 2004, it is still widespread in the country’s central and western regions.

People believe that if a woman stays inside the house during menstruation then the gods and goddesses get angry. In some cases, women are instructed to live in separate areas of the house, but in other cases they are often forced to live in mud huts outside the house. From horror stories of their fathers telling them to stay at home if they are menstruating, to being forbidden from touching cattle or crops during menstruation, women face all kinds of discrimination.

During menstruation, women cannot participate in activities such as worship or visit temples. In fact, the Chaupadi tradition also excludes women who have just given birth and are forced to live in similar conditions, which can also invite infection and make them seriously ill. . Babies and mothers cannot be subjected to such conditions immediately after birth, as this can lead to increased infant and maternal mortality because of their increased susceptibility to diseases and infections.

Women who are isolated from Chaupadi are also molested and sexually abused, due to which this tradition has not only exerted physical but also adverse psychological effects on them.
