Review: 2021 Tata Tigor EV – carandbike

At least when it comes to electrification, Tata Motors is at the forefront. The Nexon EV accounts for the bulk of the electric passenger car space in the country, and now to give some company to the subcompact SUV, another electric car has been introduced in the subcompact space. The 2021 facelift of the Tigor EV is currently the most affordable electric passenger car in the country. In its new avatar, the car promises long range, connected car technology and a warranty that won’t expire soon.

design

The redesigned grille with a blue slate and EV badge is unmissable.

The car gets styling elements similar to the Tigor facelift that was launched earlier this year. But you can’t miss the EV badge on the more futuristic looking grille along with the blue slate. Projector headlights, new horizontal fog lamps with integrated LED DRLs, new alloy wheels and revised taillamps also find a place here. There is something more blue on the 14-inch wheels to make the EV stand out from its petrol sibling. Altogether there are 3 variants available but only the top-of-the-line XZ+ gets the dual tone option. Apart from the signature teal blue, the car also gets a Daytona gray option.

Once again you get to see blue accents in the cabin. You see them on AC vents and on seats that get the tri-arrow pattern. Overall, the front row offers a lot of premium appeal with a modern looking instrument cluster that informs the range, regenerate and eco mode among other things. The drive selector is very ergonomically placed and is good to hold. While you get automatic climate control on all variants, the mid XM trim gets a 4-speaker Harman infotainment system, interior lighting with theater dimming and all 4 power windows.

The 7-inch touch screen is neatly integrated into the dash and placed just right, neither too much nor too little. It is compatible with both AppleCarPlay and Android Auto. The 2021 Tigor EV is also a connected car and comes with a suite that offers over 30 features including remote cooling, intrusion alert and charging status. It is available only on the top XZ+ with cooled glovebox, push button start and foldable rear armrest.

The spare wheel is mounted vertically in the boot to give you more space.

The space in the second row is good but there is no AC vent here. The spare wheel is placed vertically in the boot to give you 316 liters of space, which can go up to 375 liters if the wheel is removed as the company is also providing a puncture repair kit with the car.

The 26 kWh lithium-ion battery makes 73 bhp and 170 Nm of peak torque.

Like any electric car, you have to get used to the silent start on the Tigor EV. And it lasts as long as you’re on the road. The new electric subcompact sedan is powered by a 26 kWh lithium-ion battery coupled with a new permanent magnet synchronous electric motor that makes 73 bhp and 170 Nm of peak torque. Press the throttle and all the numbers are available at your disposal from right after the word. What he does is that the car accelerates from 0-60 kmph in 5.7 seconds. Of course, for that fast pickup you’ll need to switch to Sport mode which will ensure a little less range.

Sport mode ensures a more spirited drive but with slightly less range.

The EV has adopted the brand’s ZipTron powertrain seen on the Nexon EV as well. Its lithium-ion battery gets IP67 certification, which means you really don’t have to worry about water and dust damaging it. Our drive in the rain was hassle free in that sense. This gives you more confidence that Tata is giving a warranty of 8 years and 1.6 lakh kms on both the battery and the motor.

Tata is claiming an ARAI certified range of 306 kms on the Tigor EV.

The big claim on the Tigor EV in its latest avatar is the range which is 306 kms as per ARAI certification. Now of course in the real world that number will go down, just to give you an idea, when I started to full charge the car was showing a range of 204 kms. And after driving for about 50 kms, some of which were in stop and go traffic, the range came down to 130 kms. Now this is a significant improvement over the earlier Tigor EV. It also really depends on how light your foot is on the accelerator and how many brakes you use.

IP67 certification protects the battery from water and dust.

The sportback shape of the Tigor has not only set it apart from other cars in the segment, but has also given the car an edge when it comes to dynamics. So, changing lanes at high speed doesn’t really bother the occupants. The ride is as smooth as you would expect from a subcompact sedan. However, the steering may give you a little more feedback than it is currently. Hill Ascent and Descent features help in a hassle free drive.

In terms of safety, the Tigor EV has scored better than its petrol model.

Tata has once again scored big in terms of safety with the Tigor EV. The car has been rated 4-star crash rating by Global NCAP for the safety of both adult and child occupants. In the process, it has gone a step ahead of its petrol sibling as well. In fact, if the car had come with an ISOFIX mount as standard, the rating would have been even higher. The middle seat here has a lap belt which is not ideal either. The car gets dual airbags and ABS with EBD as standard.

charge

The car is compatible with the globally accepted CCS2 charging protocol.

As a Tata electric car owner, you might be used to the company’s Easy Power app. This makes the task of finding the nearest available charging station easy. It also lets you initiate and pay fees. With the fast charger, the car can be charged up to 80 percent in less than 1 hour. It takes 8.5 hours to achieve this using a home charger. Tata says the car is compatible with the globally accepted CCS2 charging protocol and can be fast-charged as well as slow-charged from any 15A plug point.

The on-road prices of the Tigor EV depend on various state subsidies.

Tigor EV price starts at Rs 11.99 lakhs which goes up to Rs 13.14 lakhs for XZ+ Dual Tone, all prices ex-showroom. Now it is almost double that of the petrol variant which only comes with manual gearbox. But unlike most other cars, the on-road price actually goes down due to the subsidies provided by various state governments on the purchase of electric vehicles, depending on where you live.

Low running costs are the trump card of cars like the Tigor EV.

The Tigor EV is now a much-improved car with its longer range, better warranty and all the technology it offers. In times of rising fuel prices, such cars make a lot of sense due to their low running cost. Depending on how much you drive, you can break even in a few years. And of course, you are doing your part in burning less fossil fuels and keeping our planet greener for longer.
