The ‘Basic Animal Husbandry Statistics’ prepared by the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying after an Integrated Sample Survey has shown an increase in milk, egg and meat production in the country.

Union minister Parshottam Rupala, who released the report on Wednesday, said the contribution of the livestock sector to the agriculture sector is showing steady improvement, indicating its growing importance to the country’s economy.

The report states that the total milk production in the country in 2022 was 221.06 million tonnes. India remained the largest milk producing country in the world. The report states that there was an increase of 5.29% in production as compared to the previous year. The per capita availability of milk was 444 grams per day.

There has been an increase of 6.16% in the milk production of exotic/cross breed cattle and 6.13% in milk production of indigenous or non-descript cattle as compared to last year. Milk production from buffaloes also increased by 4.44% as compared to 2021 and indigenous buffaloes contributed 31.58% of the total production, followed by 29.91% of crossbred cattle. “Indigenous cattle contribute 10.35% to the total milk production in the country, while non-descript cattle contribute 9.82% and non-descript buffaloes contribute 13.49% to the total milk production in the country. ,

Goat milk contributes 2.93% to the total production across the country. The survey showed that the share of foreign cow in the total milk production was 1.92%. Rajasthan (15.05%), Uttar Pradesh (14.93%), Madhya Pradesh (8.60%), Gujarat (7.56%) and Andhra Pradesh (6.97%) together contribute 53.11% to the total milk production of the country. Milk production in 2020-21 was 209.96 million tonnes.

The total egg production in the country was 129.60 billion and is 6.19% higher than the previous year. The per capita availability of eggs is 95 eggs per year. The top five egg producing states are Andhra Pradesh (20.41%), Tamil Nadu (16.08%), Telangana (12.86%), West Bengal (8.84%) and Karnataka (6.38%) and these states together contribute 64.56% of the total egg production. . Country.

The total meat production in the country was 9.29 million tonnes. There was an increase of 5.62% in comparison to the previous year. Meat production from poultry was 4.78 million tonnes, which contributes about 51.44% of the total production. Poultry meat production has increased by 6.86% over the previous year. “The top five meat producing states are Maharashtra (12.25%), Uttar Pradesh (12.14%), West Bengal (11.63%), Andhra Pradesh (11.04%) and Telangana (10.82%). They contribute 57.86% of the total meat production in the country,” said the survey.

51.44% of the meat production was contributed by poultry. “Buffalo, goat, sheep, pig and cattle contribute about 17.49%, 13.63%, 10.33%, 3.93% and 3.18% of meat production respectively to the total meat production of the country,” said the survey.

Ranpal Dhanda, president of the Poultry Federation of India, said more people are opting for eggs and chicken for their protein requirements. “Any increase in our per capita consumption of eggs and meat will bring lot of employment opportunities in the country. Even now, our per capita consumption of eggs and chicken is very low as compared to the developed world,” said Mr. Dhanda.

The survey states that the total wool production in the country during 2021-22 was 33.13 thousand tonnes, which was 10.30% less than the previous year.
